Companion Pigs And Zoning

Ever since potbelly pigs were introduced to this country in the mid nineteen eighties they have been cherished house pets and good citizens.

At first they appeared only in the most affluent areas because of their rarity and very high price tags and the status that accompanied having the newest exotic household pet.

Now, after almost two decades of quietly being cherished by only those who could afford to have the very best they have now become priced at about the same as a registered cat or dog. This makes it possible for the average person to experience the unique pleasure of living with one of the most intelligent animals on earth.

Miniature pigs, as companion house pets, was one of the lasting great things that came out of the decade of the eighties. Their cleanliness, good nature, ease of upkeep, intelligence and gregarious mannerism has won them a place in our hearts and homes for generations to come.

Our pet pigs have come to towns, cities and rural areas across the country. They are as common as dogs, cats or any other house pet.

Many municipalities when first incorporated long before potbelly pigs even were introduced to this country wrote into their zoning codes the provision that livestock, farm animals, swine or pigs would not be permitted within the city limits.

THIS IS THE TIME to check and help clarify their outmoded notions of a pig as a pet. Clear definitions of what a companion pet pig actually is and more importantly what it is not.

Most cities in this country simply accept potbelly pigs as the companion and common household pets that they are.

Imported in 1986 as exotic house pet pigs, bred and sold as a household pet only, fed a specially formulated diet to promote a long and vigorous life, having no byproduct or end product or offspring, that is the only reasonable conclusion that can be drawn.

Each and every pet pig kept as a household companion should be registered as a pet, either spayed or neutered, receives annual doctor visits for routine hoof trims and examinations.

As we know our pet pigs bond with our families for life and if separated a possibility of death can occur. The caregivers of our pet pigs for the most part are unique, knowledgeable and very dedicated group of people. Can the same be said for those who arbitrarily acquire and wantonly discard other pets such as cats and dogs.

Most zoning challenges are really non-issues as that all is required are help in clarification of what a companion house pig is. Once that is understood they are welcomed into the community as the good citizens that they already are.

There do exist pockets of resistance based on fear and ignorance and preconceived notions about pigs as pets. Once these things are addressed and fears eliminated pigs can be openly welcomed into these communities.

One important thing to remember is to not impose restrictions on them in the form of weight, height, color, time spent out of doors, acreage or anything that would not be imposed on any other commonly cherished household pet.

One of the zoning battles that have come up is that breeders and vets have put these restrictions on our pet pigs. Having to show proof of registration to a pet pigs registry assures the town fathers of at least one animal that will not be a health nuisance or hazard and acceptance to pet pig registry requires that the pet not be used for breeding purposes.

Can the same be said owners and caregivers of other common pets such as dogs and cats?

Please check zoning BEFORE purchasing your pet pig!
