Judging The Pet Pig We welcome you to the UNITED PET PIG REGISTRY show. It is our goal to make it enjoyable and fun for our judges and exhibitors alike. What will be judged are pet animals that live with owners who love them. Because of this we urge our judges to remember that: 'THERE IS SOMETHING GOOD TO SAY ABOUT ANY PET'. These pets are not used for breeding. As an organization primarily for the pet pig and the pet pig owner our judging criteria by necessity is a bit different than any other organizations. Below is the criteria that United Pet Pig Registry has set forth. Show

TYPE OF ANIMAL: With the United Pet Pig Registry you may find yourself judging a Potbellied Pig, KuneKune, Pet Feral Pig, Captain Cooker Pig, or the all American Farm Pig. Any pig that is not a breeding animal and is a pet is welcome to show in the United Pet Pig Registry Show. PERSONALITY AND TEMPERAMENT: Personality and temperament is of prime importance to the pet pig that is living in a home. Attention to the owner and the pets willingness to please the owner above and beyond it's expectations is essential for a pet. While we do allow for individual personalities of these unique animals, they should show willingness to respond and be tractable in the ring. While it is not mandatory, any judge should feel free to walk up and pet any pet in any class after getting the pigs attention. RESPONSE TO OWNERS: This should include the pet's ability to walk on a lead and show willingness to comply with given directions. Judge may ask for owners to walk in a given pattern or direction if needed to judge a close placement. ATHLETIC ABILITY AND MOVEMENT: Pet pigs should show soundness with smooth-flowing motion providing ease of movement and travel, free of irregular movement. While our senior pet pigs are not expected to have as much athletic ability as the junior pigs, they should still be sound and functional in their movement. GROOMING AND MAINTENANCE: Because these animals are pets, grooming and maintenance on a regular basis is an important part of the pet pigs life. It is easy to detect the pig that was put in the tub for a quick trip to the show. The pet pig shows a different degree of cleanliness that represents daily care of eyes, ears, teeth, hooves and coat condition. CONFORMATION: Our conformation of the pet pig is based first on function. A well balanced sound animal is the criteria for conformation. We are not concerned with length of nose or even length of leg, but more about function and the ability of the animal to participate in actions that might be required on a daily basis as pet. Eyes that are clear and wide spaced to insure good eyesight as much as possible is desirable. While a shorter legged pig is preferred in some breeds. There should be no problem with a longer legged pet if the pet is balanced and athletic according to the age of the pig and is able to move freely and soundly. |
B&B (BIG AND BEAUTIFUL): This class is for our pet pigs that weigh 200 or more of any breed. (Not obese pigs, just larger more to love pigs). Animals to be judged on same criteria as pets in other classes giving consideration that pigs that are larger will not show as much athletic ability as smaller breeds. At this time, this class will not be divided into age groups, winner of this class B&B Champion and Reserve will move on to final standings with the other divisions. COMMUNITY SERVICE (OPTIONAL): For pet pigs that do community service at no charge to hospitals, schools, nursing homes, etc. The point system will be 1 (one) point for every year. The judge will ask the exhibitor for the year(s) of service and add points to the rest of the score card. WALK ON THE WILD SIDE: This class is for pets that are expected to take in stride the different things that they may encounter on a daily basis. Each show is urged to define this class to suit the pets in their area. Some suggestions for first timers would be: pigs come into the ring single file, weave in and out of cones, walk over a board, ramp or rug, walk up to the judge to be petted. This is a simple one, some pets need a more difficult arrangement and this can be done with water pools, garbage bags that they must walk on. The only requirement is that they walk to the judge and allow themselves to be touched by the judge at the end. Keep in mind that this is not an obstacle course, but a class that can have exhibitors moving through in a fairly fast manner. It is suggested that not more than 4 (four) things be included for the pig to walk around, through, or over. Our hope is that while not everyone can be a winner, we can strive to see that everyone enjoys the show and the pigs with their pet owners can leave feeling good about themselves, their pets, and each other.
